May 21, 2001 – Got to bed around midnight last night because I had to get things together so I could leave. Woke up around 3:30am so I could catch the shuttle to the airport. The company flew me from Dallas Love Field to the airport in Amarillo, TX so I could meet my trainer at a truckstop. I got to the truck stop around 9:30am and had to wait until about 5:00pm until he could get there. I had talked to my trainer over the phone the night before so I knew that I would be waiting awhile. I got my laundry taken care of and just sat around the rest of the day talking with a couple of drivers that were really nice. One was actually a trainer for our company. Luckily I had a signal for my internet so I was able to play on the internet for awhile.
Once he got there I loaded my stuff in the truck and off we went. We had a load of frozen meat/chicken that he had picked up in NY and delivering to a suburb of Los Angeles.
The first night we stayed at a truckstop/casino called Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque, NM. He was telling me how good the buffet was there so he took me to get a rewards card because it gave us a discount on the buffet. We got up to pay and it was $17.99 on Saturdays because it was BBQ night or something. I elected to drink a glass of water and watch him eat! Afterwards I went to a Dairy Queen that is there for a burger.
He said that he had planned on me driving for a little while but that I looked fatigued and he was right.
Lucky for me, I got a good trainer. We get along good and that makes it nice since we are side by side in a very small area, 24/7 for the next 5 weeks.
